Yoga at the library

Under-appreciated pollinators

Wednesday, June 5 from 5:30-7:30 PM @ Main Branch
Adults and teens can join us at 5:30 PM to make a pressed flower lantern followed by a webinar at 6:30 PM with gardening expert Melinda Myers on under-appreciated pollinators. The plight of honeybees and monarchs fills the news, but many more pollinators are often overlooked yet critical to the production of food, fiber, and other raw materials we depend upon. Native bees, moths, bats, beetles, flies, and birds are also important. The webinar will look at a variety of pollinators, their role in the environment, and their impact on people. Plus, you will discuss ways to co-exist with these often overlooked and sometimes feared or dreaded animals. No registration required!

Ford Motor company plant

Mondays, June 10, 17, and 24 from 6:30-8:00 PM @ Main Branch
Local historian Bill Cummings will present the history of the Iron Mountain Ford Motor Company Plant which was located in Kingsford to teens and adults. Major topics will include Henry Ford’s Beginnings in the Automobile Industry, Henry Ford’s Early Connection with Iron Mountain and Dickinson County, building the Iron Mountain Ford Motor Company Plant, Model T Parts production, Station Wagon production, WACO CG-4A Glider production, Post-War Station Wagon Production, Charcoal Briquet Production, and the closing of the Iron Mountain Ford Motor Company Plant. Main branch book club

Teens and adults are invited to discuss the U.P. Notable Book, “Firekeeper’s Daughter” by Angeline Boulley. New members are welcome to join book club! No registration required!

Food passport challenge kits

Available starting Wednesday, June 12 @ All Branches
Teens and adults can pick up a packet that includes a blank passport, food recipes, local restaurants, and information with our A to Z the USA and Global Road Warrior resources. Upon completing the challenge, turn your passport in for the chance to win a prize!

Patrons of all ages and reading abilities can practice their reading skills by reading aloud to therapy dogs, Azul, a Siberian Husky-mix and Diogee, a Sheepadoodle. Registration is required and begins on Wednesday, June 5; please call (906) 774-1218 to sign up for a 15-minute time slot with either or both dogs!

The art of being

Saturday, June 15 from 1:00-3:00 PM @ Main Branch
This drop-in program is designed for patrons in grade 5 and up that are currently battling cancer, are survivors of cancer, and for those that are/have been caregivers (includes family, friends, medical personnel, etc.). Each month a craft kit will be available for attendees to do if they wish; June will be a Sharpie Shoe Craft.  No registration required!

Mario Party- LIbrary Edition

Monday, July 1-Saturday, July 13 during library hours @ Main Branch
Live action Mario Party for all ages at your library! Groups of 2-6 people can register for a time slot to play. The game board will be based off Kemek's Library. Upon checking in at the desk, the staff will give you a dice and instruction sheet/ score card. Take turns moving spaces on the board and playing mini games after each round. 10 rounds will be allotted per group. Participants will get to choose their choice of Mario Themed prize at the end. Michigan author Bonnie Jo Campbell will share her inspiration and process for writing "The Waters,” a novel about exceptional women and the soul of a small town, with teens and adults. “The Waters” is a TODAY Show #ReadWithJenna Book Club Selection and one of Oprah Daily’s most anticipated books of 2024. Books will be available for purchase and signing. No registration required!

SKi Jumpers of the Upper PEninsula

Monday, July 29 at 6:00 PM at the top of Pine Mountain Ski Jump (UP Veterans War Memorial and Park)
Ironwood based singer/songwriter Bill Jamerson will perform an hour-long musical tribute to the early ski jumpers of the Upper Peninsula at Pine Mountain Resort to adults and teens. Jamerson tells stories and performs original songs he wrote based on interviews with many ski jumping legends he interviewed 25 years ago in Marquette County. Most of the stories take place in the 1930’s and 1940’s and describe the ski jumping culture at its height when teenage boys traveled across the Midwest to compete at tournaments. Following the presentation, there will be a brief tour of the Pine Mountain Ski Jump by members of the Kiwanis Ski Club. Meet at the top of the Pine Mountain Ski Jump, (UP Veterans War Memorial and Park, Kramer Drive, Iron Mountain, MI.) No registration required.
