SUMMER READING BEGINS

Summer Reading is coming to the Dickinson County Library! Registration for the 2017 Summer Reading program will begin on Monday, June 5 at All Branches of the Dickinson County Library. Patrons of all ages may stop by and sign-up for the program, or register from home through our website, www.dcl-lib.org. This summer’s theme is “Build a Better World!” Patrons of all ages will celebrate new ways to participate in building up our community and the world around us.
With generous community support, the library will host entertaining and educational performances including “Cameron Zvara—Magician. Entertainer. Balloon Artist.”, Phyllis Carlson, Exotic Animal Pet Rescue, the Bergonzi String Quartet, the Michigan Science Center, the Lake Effect Quintet, Soundz of Time with Jan & Gino, the Cornish Pump Mining Museum, Snakes Alive, Alex Thomas & Friends, Bubble Wonders, and Nerf Mobile Games. Traditional favorites and unique new programs abound for all ages!
Preschool storytime, “Building Little Readers,” will feature guest storytellers; children will recycle household items into pet toys for shelter animals and collage crafts for home; teens will create food masterpieces at Teen Iron Chef; and adults will learn about home safety and preserving nature while saving some time for fun with Lego building and board games!

Bergonzi String Quartet

Explore the secret language of music at this free concert for families by the Bergonzi String Quartet, Friday, June 23, 2 PM at the Dickinson County Library—Main Branch in Iron Mountain as part of the Pine Mountain Music Festival. This family-oriented performance by the world-renowned Bergonzi String Quartet will demonstrate how the hidden elements of sound transform and shape the musical messages that make us feel different emotions. Refreshments will follow the concert. Refreshments are sponsored by the Friends of the Dickinson County Library.

Watch & Play Day featuring SUMMER WARS
Saturday, June 24, All Day (Movie at 11 AM)

Families and patrons of all ages are invited to Watch & Play Day, Saturday, June 24 at the Dickinson County Library—Main Branch in Iron Mountain! Board and card games will be available all day for players of any age, with the movie showing, Summer Wars, showing at 11 AM. This anime film features everyday heroes who must win games against an artificial intelligence to save the day! Visit the library just for the movie showing, or play some games and take a break during the film! Summer Wars is rated PG-13.

Making Pet Toys

Craft a better world for shelter animals at Making Pet Toys, Monday, June 26, 10:30 AM at the Dickinson County Library—Solomonson Branch in Norway, and 1 PM at the Main Branch in Iron Mountain. We’ll use donated t-shirts to make knotted toys for cats and dogs! Participants are invited to make toys to be donated to Upper Peninsula animal shelters, as well as extras for their own pets. This program is for children grades 4 and up. Younger children can have a fun time with siblings or challenge other tweens and teens to see who can make the most toys in the allotted time! Mechanical Wonders

Take a tour of Upper Peninsula history during Mechanical Wonders, Monday, July 17, 10 AM at the Cornish Pump Mining Museum in Iron Mountain. Local historian William Cummings and members of the museum board will guide children in grades 2-12 on a tour of the museum, highlighting three mechanical wonders: the Cornish Pumping Engine, a WWII CG-4A Glider, and a 1939 Ford V8 Woody Station Wagon! Attendees will meet at the Cornish Pump Mining Museum. A permission slip signed by a parent must be submitted to the library no later than Wednesday, July 12 for a child to attend.
