Celebrate Money Smart Week

Celebrate Money Smart Week at the Dickinson County Library with Money Smart Week Storytimes for preschool children and Money Smart: How to Make Cents for grades K-5! Money Smart Week is a time for evaluating personal financial goals and activities using resources your library provides. Visit our branches or our website, www.dcl-lib.org, for personal financial literacy resources made available by Money Smart Week partners. Kids can get a jump start on being money smart with the following programs:

Money Smart Week Storytimes will feature stories and rhymes which introduce your children to the concepts of money and how to be smart about it! Children ages 0-5 and their parents are invited on Tuesday, April 25, 10 AM at the Dickinson County Library—Main Branch in Iron Mountain and Wednesday, April 26, 10:30 AM at the Dickinson County Library—Solomonson Branch in Norway. While supplies last, participating families will receive a copy of the book A Dollar for Penny, compliments of Michigan Credit Unions!

Money Smart: How to Make Cents

Make finances fun with Money Smart: How to Make Cents, Thursday, April 27, 3:45 PM at the Dickinson County Library—Solomonson Branch in Norway and Saturday, April 29, 10 AM at the Main Branch in Iron Mountain. Money concepts such as saving and spending will be highlighted during this program for elementary age children: you’re never too young to learn how to be smart about money! Enjoy the stories, Start Saving, Henry by Nancy Carlson and A Bike Like Serio’s by Maribeth Beolts, and play games like, “Don’t Break the Bank” and “Create a Coin Animal.” Then, create Chore Board Clips to come up with ideas for earning money at home. This program is for grades K-5.

Celebrate National Poetry Month at the library with Visiting Author Troy Graham, Thursday, April 27 at the Dickinson County Library—Main Branch in Iron Mountain! Troy Graham is a poet and musician based in Marquette who will visit the library to discuss the processes of writing and performing poetry. At 4 PM, young adults are invited to a poetry workshop to kickstart writing inspiration and provide a welcoming environment for sharing your poetry. At 6 PM, adults are invited to a poetry reading and discussion featuring Mr. Graham’s work and covering topics of your interest concerning poetry performance and writing! Don’t miss these excellent workshops and performances!

International Tabletop Games Day

Celebrate International Tabletop Day, Saturday, April 29, at the Dickinson County Library—Main Branch in Iron Mountain and Solomonson Branch in Norway! Join us from 10 AM-1 PM at the Solomonson Branch in Norway, and from 11 AM-5 PM at the Main Branch in Iron Mountain. This program at the Main Branch in Iron Mountain will debut a game newly acquired by the library: Dead of Winter, a cooperative board game requiring players to work together to survive the game’s storyline! Try out this game, play classic favorites,
or bring your own games to share with other attendees!

This program combines our Family Games Day program with a Saturday Matinee and is open to all ages! Board and card games will be available all day for players of any age, with a movie showing at 11 AM of Pokemon 4Ever! Visit the library just for the movie showing, or play some games and take a break during the film! Pokemon 4Ever is rated G.

Loreen Niewenhuis, author of A 1,000-Mile Great Lakes Island Adventure, A 1,000-Mile Walk on the Beach, and A 1,000-Mile Great Lakes Walk, will present a program about her experiences hiking around the Great Lakes and participating in the moose count at Isle Royale. This series of craft recycling programs will challenge you to salvage old books by using them to create beautiful literary decorations. This month, roll pages to make decorative bouquets that look like lilacs! Books and craft materials will be available. The Solomonson Branch in Norway will host the same show, Monday, May 22, 6 PM at Norway City Hall! The library is overjoyed to bring a full magic show from Mischief & Magic, LLC to two locations in our area after their excellent performance at our Block Party in September 2016! This group of Green Bay area performers and magicians are sure to impress, surprise, and put a smile on your face.
